Chinese research vessel Dayang Yihao (Ocean No.1) departed from east China's Qingdao city on Tuesday, heading for northwest Pacific ocean for its 48th deep-sea mission.
The 48th mission aims to conduct a comprehensive survey about resource and environment in the seamount zone in northwest Pacific Ocean, which will fulfill China's responsibility in the contract of exploring cobalt-rich crust, and conduct deep-sea environment survey on marine microplastics and radioactive nuclide. The trip is expected to last for 100 days, covering a distance of 6,700 nautical miles.
Dayang Yihao will take China's two self-developed unmanned underwater submersibles "Hailong III" and "Hailong 11000", which will work together for the first time.
"These two submersibles work in different depth below the water surface. Their main functions vary, too. 'Hailong III' mainly works at a depth of 4,500 meters, obtaining more accurate samples and statistics from the seamounts and other related resources; while 'Hailong 11000' is capable of reaching a depth of 6,000 meters, which will allow us to get more accurate information of crusts and other creatures," said Li Huaiming, leading scientist of the expedition team for Dayang Yihao's 48th mission.
This expedition is considered of great significance in the fields of scientific research and exploration. As the investigation zone enjoys an abundance of biological resources and diverse ecological systems, a precision survey by submersibles will provide data support for environment protection and scientific development of the area.
