Kenneth Koo, chairman and chief executive of Hong Kong’s TCC Group, has been appointed chairman of the 6th Sustainable Ocean Summit, which will be held in Hong Kong, 14-16 November 2018.
Organized by the World Ocean Council, SOS is its signature event. This year’s SOS will aims to bring together ocean industry chief executives to consider the future of ocean business and provide projections on growth of the ocean economy.
In addition there will be a focus on the work of women leaders in the maritime sector and young ocean professionals.
Sessions will address port resiliency, sustainable fishing and aquaculture, ocean-derived energy, marine pollution, marine biodiversity. Particular attention will be given to increasing ocean knowledge through industry data collection, a project that the WOC and its members have been involved in since its launch in 2008.

“The SOS brings together the international ocean business community to advance collaboration on ‘Corporate Ocean Responsibility’ and I encourage leadership companies from all ocean industries to attend.”
Mr Koo added, “The World Ocean Council is the unique, global, multi-industry forum that brings together leadership companies who care about the ocean to engage with their peers from a range of other ocean business sectors, and with other stakeholders. TCC is proud to be a WOC Member and I urge other companies to get involved in this important organization.”
The choice of Mr Koo as this year’s chair of SOS 2018, is to be applauded. In addition to his place at the head of one of Hong Kong’s leading dynastic shipowners. He has been a pioneer in environmentally-friendly shipping operations.
His work has included leading a working group in the Hong Kong Shipowners Association developing the first ever set of guidelines for the selection and application of ballast tank coatings in 1994.
He formed a working group of 12 Mainland China maritime education and training institutes to develop unified minimum standards of training in 1999. He was involved in developing a proto-type “Yangtzemax” capesize bulk carrier with Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipyard in 2000.
In 2010 Mr Koo established a research and development programme with the University of Southern California’s Viterbi School of Engineering to develop complete combustion efficiency in marine diesel engines to address the pressing environmental issues of greenhouse gas emissions from ships.
