CPC Corporation Taiwan (CPC) is claiming to be the first company to operate diesel electric-powered tankers over 500 dwt. The 2,900 dwt Chung Yu No 21 and Chung Yu No 22 were built specifically to deliver bunkers in the port of Kaohsiung. Each tanker features a propulsion unit of three Yanmar 6EY22ALW diesel generators supplying an electric motor.
“This results in better propulsive force and, in turn, saves up to 29% fuel consumption. That is, 313 tonnes less CO2 emission per barge each year” said CPC chairman Tai Chein.
According to Yanmar, the base spec three-phase generator has a rated output of 1,250 kWe and weighs 18 tonnes. The new tankers are part of a port area air pollution improvement policy by Maritime Port Bureau of Kaohsiung. The two tankers were ordered in 2016 at Triyards in Vietnam at a reported cost of NT$367M (US$11M in 2016) each.
