At the annual luncheon held jointly by the Hong Kong Shipowners Association and the Marine Department a number of awards were handed out to shipowners in relation to the Hong Kong Shipping Registry.
Tonnage entered on the HKSR exceeded 116m GT as at the end of April 2018. Making a large contribution to that figure and awarded for having the highest GT on the registry in 2017 was China Cosco Shipping Corporation. CSCC also scooped the award for placing the most GT on HKSR in 2017.
CCSC claimed a third award through its ownership of MV Cosco Shipping Taurus, the ship that crossed the 115m GT milestone on the HKSR.
Chinese shipowners now account for around 60% of the total entered tonnage on the HKSR.
Director of Marine, Maisie Cheng highlighted the quality of the HKSR:
“As a result of the joint effort of ship owners, operators, staff and recognised organisations Hong Kong-registered ships are also among the best performers in the world,” Ms Cheng said, explaining that the average detention rate of Hong Kong-flagged ships was about 0.7% last year compared to the global average of 2.95%.
