Xi urges to restore ecological environment at Yangtze River

Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged to restore the ecological environment of the Yangtze River during an inspection tour of Hubei and Hunan provinces in central China on Wednesday.

In Hubei, Xi boarded a ship at the Jingzhou Port on Wednesday morning to inspect the ecological environment, development and construction situation along the Yangtze River.

On the ship, Xi also listened to reports about illegal wharfs governance in Jingzhou, shipping and channel management on the Yangtze River, as well as work concerning river regime control and bank-protection.

Xi reached the Yueyang City in Hunan Province in the afternoon. His first stop there was the Hualong wharf at Junshan, that sits beside the trunk stream of the Yangtze River.

The wharf which was once an illegal aggregate handling dock, now boasts a natural and healthy ecological environment.

Xi said restoring the ecological environment of the Yangtze River is a challenging task in the new era and also the ardent wish of the public when inspecting the ecological regime at the National Nature Reserves of the East Dongting Lake via real-time monitor at a monitoring station.

According to Xi, the top priority of the restoration work is to stop unordered exploration, limit discharge capacity, fight against illegal discharge of waste and illegal sand excavation.

Xi said we definitely can't allow the ecological environment at the Yangtze River to deteriorate in our generation and we must leave our descendants a clean and beautiful Yangtze River.

In Yueyang, Xi also inspected the Chenglingji hydrometric station and learned about the situation on water resources monitoring and management along the Yangtze River in Hunan, as well as the prevention and reduction of natural disasters.
