Marcel Liedts, chief operating officer of Hong Kong-based shipmanager Anglo Eastern Group, were finally recognised with the Dedication to the Maritime Industries Award at the Seatrade Maritime Awards Asia event in Singapore on 25 April.
Anglo Eastern Group Chairman, Peter Cremers was quick to congratulate his friend and colleague.
“Marcel is the one who has relentlessly driven our vision of technical excellence throughout the organization day after day 24/7 for 30 years.
“Whilst I have been the face of the company, the full body was certainly Marcel. His drive was critical to managing the size of a fleet that is second to none in the industry. So having the limelight on him for once gave me great pleasure. It was certainly overdue.
“Immediately after receiving the award he was back checking his emails,” Mr Cremers laughed.
Fleet Management, another Hong Kong-based ship manager swept up the Ship Manager of the Year Award. Law firm, Stephenson Harwood, which has offices across the region including Hong Kong took the Maritime Law Award.
Hong Kong’s leading dry bulk owner and operator Pacific Basin had been nominated in a number of categories but on the night went home empty handed.
The evening’s proceedings was distinguished by the number of women receiving awards taking no less than three out of the four individual awards on offer.
The Seatrade Lifetime Achievement Award went to Tan Beng Tee, assistant chief executive, Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore. Doris Ho, president and chief executive of Magsaysay Group of Companies was recognised as the Seatrade Personality of the Year. Katie Me, managing director of Iseaco Investment Pte walked away with the Seatrade Young Person of the Year Award.
Earlier evidence that the maritime sector had “woke” to the presence of women in the industry was manifest in an all female panel at the Maritime Money conference in Hong Kong this month.
