Nautical Institute wins Excellence in Export award

The Nautical Institute Wins “Excellence in Export” Award at the
2018 International e-Assessment Awards

The Nautical Institute has been named the winner of the Excellence in Export award in the 2018 annual e-Assessment Awards. The awards honour organisations that seek to innovate in the way examinations are conducted.

Captain John Lloyd FNI, the NI’s CEO, explained the export award recognises organisations which have delivered “innovative and effective” programmes in one or more countries outside of their main country of operation.

“We’re delighted to be recognised among the pioneers in the field of e-assessment,” said Captain Lloyd. “We have transformed the way that the Institute delivers exams to our base of dynamic positioning maritime professionals. These professionals are, by the nature of their employment, a very mobile audience located all over the world, which presents unique challenges in running certification exams.”

Research shows that despite developments in the world of e-learning, the majority of exams still require exam papers to be printed, with all the logistical headaches of moving around papers securely. The Nautical Institute utilises technological advances in online examinations to deliver exams on computers throughout a global network of around 100 training centres.

“Our worldwide centres can enrol candidates and schedule exams, but access to the full exam paper is restricted to our headquarters in London, which increases the security of exam papers and results,” said Captain Lloyd.

“Eradicating paper-based exams has had a transformative effect on the amount of administration involved for us, and we can access data and reports easily, while at the same time really improving the candidate experience,” he added.

Working with technological examination company TestReach, The NI is now investigating introducing even more flexibility in exam delivery –  opening up the possibility of exams being run on board ships at sea.

Award winners were selected by the e-Assessment Judging panel, which is comprised of forward-thinking leaders in e-learning and e-assessment industries. To become a finalist, companies must show achievement in innovation, talent development and social responsibility.
