Shenzhen's Nanshan helps foreign sailors receive pay

The Nanshan Maritime Safety Bureau said it helped 15 foreign sailors receive salary owed to them by their employer.

The bureau received a complaint at the end of last month alleging that sailors of the Liberia-registered ship Helsinki, which was expected to undergo a repair at a Shekou shipyard soon, were owed salary. After the vessel arrived at the Shekou Youlian Shipyard, bureau officers conducted an inspection of the Helsinki. After conducting separate interviews with the 15 crew members and a nine-hour investigation, the bureau found the allegations were true and the payment of salary had been delayed several times over the last year.

Following the investigation, the bureau barred the ship from leaving Shekou and communicated with the Liberian authorities and relevant parties. With the intervention of the Liberian authorities, the overdue salary of the 15 sailors was paid in full.

The ship was later allowed to leave the shipyard.
