Over the last two months, COSCO Shipping Group has demonstrated its strong commitment to fleet expansion and sustainability with orders for an impressive 60 new vessels. These new orders include bulk carriers, container ships, and LNG carriers, positioning the company at the forefront of global shipping with modern, eco-friendly vessels.
LNG Carriers and Bulk Carriers Leading the Charge:
In early September, COSCO Shipping Energy announced the construction of two 175,000-cubic-meter LNG carriers at Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company, with a total investment of $509.23 million. These LNG vessels will employ advanced energy-saving technologies and adhere to the latest international emission standards. This marks a significant move in strengthening COSCO's capabilities in the growing LNG shipping market
On August 30th, COSCO Shipping Development signed a major agreement for the construction of 42 bulk carriers, in collaboration with COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Yangzhou), COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Zhoushan), and Chengxi Shipyard. These vessels, ranging from 64,000 DWT to 82,500 DWT bulk carriers, will be methanol-ready and equipped with modern eco-friendly engines. The bulk carrier order includes:
20 bulk carriers constructed by COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry, with:
13 vessels of 82,500 DWT from COSCO HI (Yangzhou).
7 vessels of 64,000 DWT from COSCO HI (Zhoushan).
22 bulk carriers of 80,000 DWT will be constructed by Chengxi Shipyard, with expected deliveries starting in 2026 through 2027. The vessels are designed for enhanced fuel efficiency and will be fitted with scrubbers and other eco-technologies.
Methanol-Powered Container Ships and Asphalt Carriers:
Further solidifying its commitment to green shipping, COSCO Shipping Lines signed contracts for 12 methanol dual-fuel ultra-large container vessels with a capacity of 14,000 TEU each. These vessels will be constructed by COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Yangzhou) and delivered between 2027 and 2029. Each ship will be equipped with eco-friendly, modern engines designed to minimize carbon emissions.
Additionally, COSCO Shipping Special Transport placed an order for four asphalt carriers with 9,000 DWT from Fujian Mawei Shipbuilding. These specialized carriers will cater to the growing demand for transporting bitumen and asphalt, with expected deliveries between 2025 and 2026.
As of September, with 60 new vessels ordered in just two months.
