Pyxis, Homegrown Maritime Electrification Start-Up, Makes Waves with Singapore’s First Electric Port Passenger Launch

Pyxis, Singapore’s maritime electrification technology start-up, officially launches today in a momentous event held at Clifford Pier. The event was attended by various business leaders and representatives from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Enterprise Singapore.

The evening, which honoured Singapore's maritime heritage while embracing the electrifying possibilities of the present and future, also unveiled innovative product lines featuring Singapore’s first fully electric port passenger launch – X Tron.

“We are thrilled to unveil the X Tron as the first of 13 Pyxis electric harbour craft that will be delivered by the end of 2026. As frontrunners in the coastal maritime sector, we aim to propel the beginning of a new era in Singapore’s maritime industry by making electrification accessible to all and launching over 100 electric vessels across the Asia Pacific by 2030,” said Tommy Phun, Founder and CEO at Pyxis.

Founded by seasoned industry experts and supported by maritime veterans, Pyxis aims to spearhead the transition to a sustainable, greener and more efficient maritime future in both local and regional ports. In Singapore waters alone, an estimated 1,600 harbour crafts are ready to be electrified.

The industry-exclusive launch held at The Clifford Pier was attended by 300 professionals and partners, including Guest of Honour Mr Baey Yam Keng, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Transport, and Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment. With contracts secured with industry leaders including York Launch, Water B, Singapore River Experience, and Eng Motor Launch Service, solidifying partnerships across the product line, Pyxis’ commitment to revolutionising the coastal maritime industry by making electrification accessible to all in the global pivot to sustainability is underscored.

Comprising three product lines tailored for different operating conditions, Pyxis looks to boast the following:

Pyxis One: Pyxis’ flagship product, the Pyxis One is tailored for the dynamic Singapore port market. It seamlessly shuttles passengers between mainland Singapore and ships stationed at the anchorage. Capable of ferrying up to 12 passengers and two crew members, the X Tron is expected to save an estimated of up to 120kg of carbon emissions per hour in comparison to an equivalent diesel vessel.
Pyxis R: Pyxis R is an inland waterway electric river boat designed to navigate the Singapore River and is capable of accommodating up to 50 passengers. There are 10 units in the order book and the first will be delivered in the second half of 2024.
Pyxis L: Pyxis L is a luxury variant of Pyxis R that has recently sold 1 unit.

Mr Baey commended Pyxis’ close partnership with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), and said “Over the past two years, Pyxis has been a close partner of MPA in advancing the development of electrification technology and building up local capabilities in this area. “X Tron”, Pyxis’ first electric vessel, underscores the transformative potential of collaboration and demonstrates the remarkable spirit of Pyxis in daring to push the boundaries of innovation. Strong public-private partnerships have been a key enabler of capability-building and innovation in our maritime sector, and I look forward to continuing this close partnership in the years to come.”

Last November, Pyxis partnered with Mitsui O.S.K Lines to promote electric vessels in Singapore and Japan to develop the electric vessels markets. Pyxis has also successfully entered into Expression of Interest (EOI) agreements with 13 prominent maritime entities in 2023, who are both shareholders of Pyxis and potential customers and suppliers with a keen interest in leasing or purchasing Pyxis vessels. It was most recently shortlisted by MPA as one of the 11 passenger launch and cargo lighter vessel designs for the full electric harbour craft (e-HC) program. Furthermore, in partnership with SP Mobility, Pyxis has been selected to test its land-based direct current (DC) charging concept for e-HC at Marina South Pier.

Along with X Tron, Pyxis’ digital platform, Electra, ushers in an era of automation and digital transformation in the maritime industry. An all-in-one platform for fleet management, electric charging, route optimisation, predictive maintenance, and emissions reduction tracking, Electra is designed to enable a connected maritime ecosystem by providing a single pane of glass for streamlined vessel management.

“Pyxis is founded for the industry, by the industry. It is our strong network, industry expertise, and proprietary technology that allows Pyxis to focus on data-driven designs and optimisations in expanding beyond Singapore to sister ports in the APAC region. Our team of industry experts is immersed in the intricate workings of the coastal maritime landscape and is united by a shared vision to overcome the sector’s demands and challenges,” added Phun.

Since its incorporation in 2022, Pyxis has received support from multiple government agencies, including the MPA, Enterprise Singapore and their investment arm Seeds Capital, to strengthen capability development, expand operations and complete successful investment rounds.

Pyxis most recently secured a S$4.5M seed funding round in February co-led by Motion Ventures and Shift4Good. Other participants of the fundraiser include Seeds Capital, MarImpact, ShipsFocus, Tian San Shipping, Kimann Investments, and LCC Resources.
