Quanzhou port in eastern China's Fujian province saw its coal imports reach 2.59 million tonnes in the first half of this year, increasing 43.4% from the year-ago level, achieving a record high for the same period in five years, state media Chinanews reported.
The substantial imports helped to ensure coal supply for electricity generation at power plants during the peak summer period.
It was understood that a vessel with a full load of 55,000 tonnes of coal arrived at a terminal at Xiaocuo port within the Quanzhou port area at 16:00 on July 20, which was the 43rd coal-transported ship to enter Quanzhou port this year, with a year-on-year rise of 37.2% in the number of vessels.
The imported coal via Quanzhou port is mainly used by thermal power plants in Fujian and Jiangxi. A subsidiary of CHN Energy in Quanzhou has generated a cumulative annual power of 6.6 TWh as of July 20, up 19% on the year, reaching a new high for the same period.
Taking advantage of the completion of Xingguo-Quanzhou railway, the Xiaocuo port has delivered 857,000 tonnes of power coal for Jiangxi power plants through sea-rail intermodal transportation, up 29.7% from the previous year.
