Large Chinese ore carrier starts maiden voyage

A Chinese-built Very Large Ore Carrier (VLOC) left a port in east China Monday, officially kicking off its maiden voyage.

In the journey, Ore Hong Kong, one of the world’s largest 400,000-tone-deadweight ore carrier, is expected to ship iron ore from Brazil and then back to China in a period of three months. It will call at Singapore for refueling before sailing to Brazil.

The latest ore carrier is more environment-friendly. Equipped with a tank of clean energy liquid natural gas, the vessel consumes only 70 percent of fuel that their conventional counterparts need. In addition, it cuts the time of loading and unloading goods by half.

The VLOC, built by a large Chinese shipbuilder Yangzijiang Shipbuilding company, is 362 meters in length and 65 meters in width.
