Qingdao Port aims to be world-class transport hub

Qingdao Port in east China's Shangdong Province is fast developing in an effort to build itself into a world-class transport hub and contribute to the city's overall growth.

The port has put scientific innovation on top of its development agenda and made new breakthroughs at its container terminals.

As Asia's first fully automated port, it has set a record in terms of operation efficiency, processing more than 30 containers per hour by a single crane.

The port now can handle nearly 6,000 containers at one time without any on-site human labor.

Fa Zhancheng became one of the remote-control operators at the port last May. He is proud of the port's achievements.

"Although it is just a small computing platform, it cannot be underestimated, because it is able to control the whole production line. The workload used to need 60 workers, but now only nine people are able to finish this job, with near zero incident," said Fa.

China's State Council approved the establishment of the Qingdao West Coast New Area in June 2014, making it the ninth state-level economic development zone in the country.

During the past four years, the zone has introduced more than 1,300 projects, with a total investment exceeding 1.2 trillion yuan.

These new opportunities have been propelling the city as it transitions into an innovation-driven marine economy.

"Forty-five percent of the city's economic growth last year could be attributed to the West Coast New Area. The fast rise of this new area will be able to bolster the city's economic and social development in the future," said Li Fengli, director of the management committee of the Qingdao West Coast New Area.

Qingdao, as one of the first Chinese cities to open up, exemplifies the vitality of China's reform and opening up for the past four decades, and it is also an important port for the Belt and Road Initiative.
