Ningbo-Zhoushan Port develops into 1st port handling 1 bn

As an epitome of the achievements made by China's reform and opening up, the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port has developed into the world's first international port which handles one billion tons of cargoes a year.

The Ningbo-Zhoushan Port is the busiest in the world in terms of cargo tonnage, handling over one billion tons of cargoes in 2017. It is located in Ningbo-Zhoushan, on the coast of the East China Sea, in Zhejiang province south of Hangzhou Bay, across which it faces Jiaxing and Shanghai.

Authorized by the State Council, the port was officially opened on June 1, 1979. It has turned to a hub connecting China with the rest of the world from a then stagnant wharf.

"In the era of my father, there were no equipments like crane, so the volume of the containers I lift in one day nowadays can be equal to the total amount of goods my father carried in a year in that era," said Zheng Zi, a crane driver in the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port.

With the advancement of the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, the trade volume between China and the countries and regions along the Silk Road continues to increase.

Now there are 86 sea routes to and from the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, in addition to 12 sea-railway combined lines that connect 14 provinces and more than 40 cities in China with Central Asia, North Asia and Eastern Europe as an important hub for the Silk Road economic beld.

"We can not only import the goods from many ship routes, but also export them to central and eastern Europe and the countries along the Silk Road through sea-railway combined transportation. So I think this is a great achievement of our Ningbo-Zhoushan Port in the past five years, which has become a hub to boost East-West trade and exchanges," said Hong Qihu, the director of business department of the Ningbo Zhoushan Port Co., Ltd.

With the continuous progress of the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative and the development opportunities brought by the reform and opening up, the port will certainly usher in a more splendid future.

The year 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of the Reform and Opening up focusing on "Socialism with Chinese characteristics".
