Typhoon-triggered rain forces 300 cargo ships to anchor

Under the influence of typhoon Rumbia, heavy rain and strong wind began to hit Bengbu City in east China's Anhui province on Friday afternoon, forcing nearly 300 cargo ships to anchor the ship lock as the Bengbu lock along the Huaihe River lacked navigation conditions.

The precipitation in Bengbu had reached 220 millimeters in 24 hours starting Friday afternoon, causing the water level of the Bengbu lock to suddenly rise from 14.21 to 16.51 meters.

A large number of cargo ships had to anchor temporarily as the sailing condition was unfavorable, coupled with continuously rising water level and strong gale (20.8-24.4 m/s) on the river.

The Bengbu lock management, along with the local maritime department, launched a level II Huaihe navigation channel management and control plan and arranged staff 24 hours on duty, patrolled more often on the river to remind staff to cover ships' cabin with rain cloth and sent personnel to guide ships to anchor in safe waters.

"There were high waves and strong winds by that time. We patrolled more frequently along navigation channels while on duty. We made some necessary managements towards ships such as noticing them to anchor in safe waters to prevent accident," said Ma Junliang, director of transportation and management department of Maritime Bureau of Bengbu City.
