The city of Chongqing, one of China's four mega-cities under the direct administration of the central government, is seeking to play a bigger role in the shipping of the Yangtze River, a major waterway that links the landlocked western area with the eastern coasts.
The city has shifted the way of hauling containers by waterway to hauling them by a special railway at the Guoyuan Port. This has not only cut the logistics cost but also raised efficiency.
"After we have turned to the special railway line at the Guoyuan Port to haul containers to the downtown area, we didn't decrease efficiency, but greatly reduced logistics cost," said Chen Tongfeng, manager with the Supply Chain Section of the China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company (COSCO) Chongqing.
The port authorities said containers now can head straight to Europe on China-Europe freight trains after being shipped here.
A railway leading to Europe was opened at the end of 2017, as a part of the Belt and Road Initiative. Thanks to the railway, Chongqing has more than 300 trains heading to Europe in the first half of this year.
Fan Yijiang, research fellow at the Institute of Integrative Transport under the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), said transport is playing an important role in advancing the country's economic growth.
"Transportation is the harbinger of economic development. Serving as a bond, it has been added with trade and financial functions and integrated with industries, thus propelling forward the high-quality development of the entire region," he said.
