China takes up half of world's top 20 container ports

Half of world's top 20 container ports in 2018 are in China, according to a forecast report published by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) on Friday.

According to the report, the Chinese container ports will continue to take a lead in the growth of container throughput and Ningbo and Zhoushan ports in east China's Zhejiang Province are especially excellent in this regard.

"Zhejiang and other nearby provinces have been doing well in industrial restructuring and trading with countries along the route of Belt and Road. This has promoted the development of Ningbo and Zhoushan ports. Besides, bulk cargo transportation has been replaced by container transportation at the two ports, which has not only improved the efficiency but also lowered the cost of transportation. This is another important factor for their fast growth," said Wang Shouyang, director of the Center for Forecasting Science under CAS.

China takes up seven of the world's top 10 container ports and Chinese container ports will maintain a stable growth in 2018, said the report.

"The container transportation volume and transportation capacity of Chinese ports is seeing stable growth. The rapid growth phase has already passed. As for the port construction, my biggest concern is excess capacity. China should focus more on building green, safety and high efficient ports in the future," said Wang.
