MPA Academy attracts Largest Cohort of Maritime Officials to Attend Flagship Port Management Programme

The largest cohort of 27 port masters, harbour masters and middle managers from maritime and port authorities from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, Latin America and Oceania attended the sixth Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) Academy’s Port Management Programme (PMP) today.

Developed and organised by MPA Academy, the five-day programme will be delivered by industry practitioners as well as senior officers from the MPA. Some of the key subjects that will be covered during the programme include maritime safety, port planning, digitalisation of the maritime industry, emergency preparedness and crisis communication.

The programme includes lectures, practical sessions and site visits. The lectures will equip participants with theoretical knowledge as well as facilitate sharing and discussion, while the practical sessions will give participants hands-on experience to develop strategies for maritime scenarios. The site visits to MPA’s Port Operations Control Centre, SMIT Singapore Pte Ltd, Integrated Simulation Centre and PSA Terminals will expose participants to the operations of the port of Singapore. As the programme is held in conjunction with the sixth run of the International Safety@Sea Week, PMP participants will also attend the Safety@Sea conference and observe the ferry rescue exercise organised as part of the suite of activities for International Safety@Sea Week.

Ms Karen Forde, Chief Financial Officer, Barbados Ports Inc, said, “I hope to get a holistic view of port operations by immersing myself in the best in class experience in Singapore. I anticipate that this will help to enable us to meet the Barbados Port vision which is to be the most innovative green maritime hub in the world by 2030.”

Commander Eduardo Zamora, Harbour Master of Paita, General Directorate of Captaincies and Coast Guard of the Navy, Peruvian Maritime Authority, said, "To attend a course organised by the administration of one of the most important and modern ports worldwide is not just a privilege but also a responsibility. This will help guide our efforts towards achieving efficiency, sustainability and digital transformation in maritime and port of our countries."

The PMP has trained more than 110 maritime officials since its inception in 2014. MPA Academy also organises two other flagship programmes for middle to senior management of overseas maritime administrations and port authorities – the Advanced Maritime Leaders’ Programme organised for heads of maritime administrations and port authorities, and the Maritime Public Leaders’ Programme organised for directors in maritime administrations and port authorities.
