COSCO SHIPPING and Guangxi to Speed up Construction of a New Western Land-Sea Trade Corridor


On July 31, 2019, a meeting on promoting the integration, high-level opening-up and high-quality development of Beihai, Qinzhou and Fangchenggang and the construction of a new western land-sea trade corridor was held by the Party Committee and Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in Qinzhou. At the meeting, COSCO SHIPPING and the Planning and Construction Management Office of Guangxi Beibu Gulf Economic Zone signed a strategic cooperation agreement on jointly building an international gateway to the new corridor and a joint-venture agreement on Chisha Terminal in Fangchenggang, and unveiled the nameplate of Guangxi New Corridor International Container Terminal Co., Ltd.
 
Mr. Lu Xinshe, Secretary of the Party Committee of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Mr. Chen Wu, Chairman of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Capt. Xu Lirong, Chairman of COSCO SHIPPING unveiled the nameplate of Guangxi Xintongdao International Container Terminal Co., Ltd.
 
This May, the Guangxi government and COSCO SHIPPING signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement in Shanghai and agreed to strengthen cooperation on the construction and operation of the Beibu Gulf Port Container Terminal. The establishment and operation of Guangxi Xintongdao International Container Terminal Co., Ltd. marks a solid step toward the building of an international gateway to the new corridor.
 
In the presence of Mr. Lu Xinshe, Mr. Chen Wu and Capt. Xu Lirong, Mr. Wei Ran, Executive Deputy Director of the Planning and Construction Management Office of Guangxi Beibu Gulf Economic Zone and Mr. Huang Xiaowen, Executive Vice President of COSCO SHIPPING, concluded a strategic cooperation agreement on jointly building an international gateway to the new corridor on behalf of the two sides.
 
Mr. Zhang Wei, Chairman and Managing Director of COSCO SHIPPING Ports and executives from its partners, including the Beibu Gulf Port Group, Guangxi Liuzhou Iron and Steel Group Co., Ltd. and Aluminum Corporation of China, inked a JV agreement on Chisha Terminal in Fangchenggang. After its establishment, the joint venture will be responsible for the operation and development of the Chisha bulk cargo terminal in Fangchenggang and turn it into a bulk commodity distribution hub of the new corridor in Southwest China.
 
Mr. Lu Xinshe and Mr. Chen Wu also met with Capt. Xu Lirong and his delegation members in Qinzhou. Capt. Xu said, under the leadership of its Party committee and government, Guangxi has actively promoted the integration of Beihai, Qinzhou and Fangchenggang and the construction of the new corridor and speeded up the opening-up and development of the south, creating new development space for the autonomous region and the Beibu Gulf Economic Zone. In accordance with the agreement with the Guangxi government and the Planning and Construction Management Office of Guangxi Beibu Gulf Economic Zone, COSCO SHIPPING will make use of its advantages and take an active part in gateway construction to increase the container throughput of Qinzhou Port. Meanwhile, according to the phased requirements of “bottleneck elimination and rapid development”, the corporation will expand international sea-rail intermodal transportation, improve the level and efficiency of its logistics service and help Guangxi build a new pattern of opening-up and development.
